The Samstag Jeffrey Smart Commission was established in 2022 to provide opportunities for Australian art practitioners to develop a major new work, or body of works, culminating in an exhibition at Samstag Museum of Art. The Commission is awarded by Adelaide University, through its Samstag Museum of Art, in recognition of the late Jeffrey Smart—an alumnus of the South Australian School of Art.

The Commission is available, via application or invitation, to alumni of Adelaide University and its antecedents, First Nations arts practitioners, and Samstag Scholars. Applicants may be from any creative discipline, including film, performance, craft, design, architecture, or visual arts.

TO SUMBIT YOUR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST:

1. Find out if you are eligible
   All applicants must be:
• Either Australian citizens or have permanent resident status in Australia.
• Over the age of 18 years at the date when applications close.
• A practitioner from any creative discipline (such as film, performance, visual arts, craft, design, or architecture) who is either: 
1. an alumni of Adelaide University or its antecedents
2. a Samstag Scholar
   AND/OR 
3. an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander arts practitioner.

   Complete and submit the online expression of interest prior to midnight 30 September 2026 (Australian Central Standard Time).
   Accounts can be created now and the application can be started and saved for future submission. We encourage applicants to explore the application portal early, even if not submitting an application until later.
